Jim Castillo Profile
Castillo is a proud alumnus of the University of Missouri in Columbia, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Atmospheric Science(Meteorology) in the year 1989. During his stint at the university, he was a cheerleader, a Delta Tau Delta fraternity member, and the Meteorology Club’s secretary. He was also a huge fan of the Tigers’ football and basketball games.
He was raised with gymnastics, playing soccer, pole vaulting, scuba diving, and diving, among other activities. On the 7th of April, 1980, an F-3 tornado struck his area, making national headlines. This inspired his interest in meteorology. He was glued to the TV screen as a meteorologist from 5 On Your Side offered his family the information they needed to keep safe during the storm. He recalls going outside after it was all over and seeing grass blades lodged in the paint of his home, as well as pink insulation from neighboring homes sticking to his house. Severe weather can be stressful for some children. Castillo, on the other hand, found it intriguing. It inspired him to pursue a career as a meteorologist and ensure the safety of other families.
Castillo started his career at the National Weather Service(NWS) in Jefferson City, Missouri, where he was interning. He also worked as an intern at an NBC Network affiliate in Columbia, Missouri, KOMU-TV. This is where he got his first on-air job as a weather host and anchor of a popular exercise program, that aired on weekdays.
At WTXF-TV, the Fox Network station in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Castillo was the 1st meteorologist on “Good Day Philadelphia.” There he conducted man-on-the-street interviews, as well as presented segments.
He was given his first Chief Meteorologist post at KCPQ-TV, a Nexstar Media Group-owned station in Seattle, Washington, after almost 2 years. In the year 1999, he earned his first individual Northwest Emmy Award for Best Weather in the Pacific Northwest while working at the station.
