Before joining CNN, he worked for ABC News as a Paris news correspondent for 6 years (1990-1996). While there, he reported on numerous international events, such as the United States deployment in Somalia, the Middle East and Gulf War peace process, and the Soviet Union’s dissolution. Bittermann’s long-form projects at ABC included; “Fashion Conspiracy” and “A Perfect Messiah,” two-special reports for Nightline with Ted Koppel; and a report on the French AIDS-tainted blood scandal for PrimeTime Live, “Betrayed in Blood.”

Before going to ABC News, he worked for NBC News as a European correspondent for 12 years (1978-1990). In his first year at NBC News, he was based in Rome, where he reported on the travels of Pope John Paul II as well as 2 Papal transitions. He was based in Paris from 1980 to 1990, where he covered numerous significant international stories in Western and Northern Africa, the Philippines, Eastern Europe, the Soviet Union, the Middle East, and Japan.

Before joining NBC News, he worked as a producer and correspondent based in Toronto at the Canadian Broadcasting Corp.’s newsmagazine. Bittermann has served as a news reporter at WQED-TV in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and at WKYC-TV in Cleveland, Ohio (1973-1975). For one year (from 1971 to 1972), Bittermann traveled the national presidential campaign staffs, of Edmund Muskie (Senator of Maine) and Birch Bayh (Senator of Indiana). Bittermann started his broadcasting career in the year 1970 when he worked for WTMJ-TV in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Just before that, he worked for the Waukegan News-Sun in Waukegan, Illinois as a newspaper reporter for 12 months.
