Axelrod serves at CBS as the chief investigative and senior national correspondent for CBS News, reporting for “CBS This Morning,” the “CBS Evening News,” “CBS Sunday Morning,” and other CBS News broadcasts. Although in CBS News, Axelrod has reported a wide variety of domestic and foreign reports, including the conflict in Iraq and the US invasion of Afghanistan. In 2003, Axelrod was the first TV journalist to broadcast live from Baghdad’s Saddam International Airport shortly after it fell to U.S. troops. Live coverage of the U.S. Army shooting rounds of artillery into Iraqi positions was the first to be broadcast by a correspondent of ground forces engaging in combat in Iraq. Axelrod has covered the evacuation of U.S. soldiers from Iraq and was the last correspondent to leave with the army in December 2011.
Axelrod’s investigative journalism has been awarded the Peabody Award for his documentary on West Virginia’s heroin abuse epidemic, the George Polk Award for his reporting on multi-billion dollar prescription fraud compounding, and the Edward R. Murrow Award for his research on the genetic testing industry. He was also part of the CBS News staff, who honored the 2010 DuPont-Columbia Silver Baton for “CBS Reports: Children of the Recession.” Axelrod also received the Emmy Awards in 2002, 2014, and 2016.
Axelrod began as a Miami reporter on CBS and then worked in the Dallas Bureau (1997-1999) and the New York Bureau (1999-2006). He has worked as White House Chief Reporter for CBS News (2006-2009) and was named National Correspondent for CBS News in 2009. Axelrod was the host of the “CBS Saturday Evening News” from 2012 to 2016.
Before joining CBS News in 1996, he was a political correspondent for WRAL-TV in Raleigh, N.C. Axelrod was a reporter for WSTM-TV Syracuse, N.Y. (1990-1993) and WUTR-TV Utica, N.Y. He started his career at WVII-TV Bangor, Maine, in 1989. Axelrod is the author of In The Long Run: A Father, A Mother, and Unintended Lessons In Happiness, published by Farrar, Straus, and Giroux in 2011.
