Hayes serves as the co-anchor of the weeknight newscasts at 4 and 6:30 p.m. alongside Christine Killimayer at WHNT. He went to Tennessee State University where he attained his college degree. Prior to joining WHNT, he spent some time as an intern at WTVF, the CBS affiliate in Nashville. He later on joined WHTV where he started off by serving as a reporter and later on as the weekend anchor. After several years, he began serving as the 6 and 10 main anchors in November 1983.
Since joining WHNT News 19, Hayes has enclosed several stories including the White House and so much more. He has also won quite a number of awards including nine Emmy Nominations and two Emmy Awards, and 12 Region Edward R. Murrow Awards for Best Sports Reporting. In 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2006, and 2005, he received the Associated Press Television Award for Best News Anchor based in Alabama.
