Kym was responsible for the death of her younger brother, Ethan, who was left under her supervision one day when she was a teenager. Lumet was cast as Pam in the American film released in 1988 Tougher Than Leather. D.M.C. is released from prison at the start of the film, and he returns to New York City with his bandmates, Run and Jam Master Jay. When things take a dark turn, they are all set to book some gigs and launch their musical careers. Runny Ray, played by Raymond White, has been murdered by Vic Ferrante (Rick Rubin), drawing the group into a seedy world of crime and violence.

Vic and the cops cover up the murder in order to make it appear that Ray died as a result of drug overdose. As the band members try to figure out who committed the murder, their own lives are jeopardized. They take matters into their own hands in an attempt to find Ray’s murderer. The action is balanced, however, by a series of musical performances by the stars and other late 1980s hip-hop stars such as Slick Rick and the Beastie Boys.
