With his 789th race in September 2015, Gordon broke Ricky Rudd’s record of 788 and joined the “iron man” company of legends like Cal Ripken Jr. and Brett Favre. Gordon, who was named one of “NASCAR’s 50 Greatest Drivers” in 1998, made 797 consecutive starts, beginning with the 1992 season finale at Atlanta Motor Speedway, which marked the end of Petty’s racing career.
Gordon became the first NASCAR CUP SERIES champion to win the 24 Hours of Daytona and just the fourth driver in history to win both the Rolex 24 and the DAYTONA 500 in January 2017, joining A.J. Foyt, Mario Andretti, and Jamie McMurray in the elite company of A.J. Foyt, Mario Andretti, and Jamie McMurray.
