Jeannie Lee Career
Lee serves CBC News Network as a Business News Broadcaster. There, she covers breaking business news for the Network. Her reports are also heard regularly on CBC Radio. She was born in Hong Kong and spent a number of years there before moving to Canada. There, she met new experiences such as mittens, a TV in the living room, and the English language.
Lee watched TV a lot when she was growing up. It is because of this that she became addicted to the news. This is also how she knew quite early that she wanted to be a journalist. When she was a teenager, she took the first step toward her goal.
Then, she made a cold call to the local TV and radio station. This call led to a summer job in the traffic department which later led to an entry-level job in the television newsroom. During this time, she went on to graduate from Concordia University with a specialization in Broadcast Journalism. She was already working full-time as a news researcher/reporter for CFCF TV.
Being a daily news reporter, she covered everything from municipal politics to a Liberal leadership convention, local demos against property hikes and the 71-day land claims standoff in Oka, Que. Later on, she specialized in consumer affairs. During the beat, she investigated and resolved consumer complaints and exposed scams and fraud artists.
Jennie’s next move was to the CBC and Toronto- a whole new city to discover and cover. While working at CBLT, she helped launch the new “5:30 Live” news program. contributing as a reporter, producer and backup host. Later on, she tackled the Urban Affairs Beat with a mandate to find and report original stories about Toronto.
She always had a passion for business news and for stories of entrepreneurs who turned humble beginnings into something extraordinary. This motivated her to move to the business beat on Newsworld, the CBC’s 24-hour news channel.
For years, she delivered her reports from a perch above the trading floor of the Toronto Stock Exchange. Later on, from the vantage point, she could tell something big was happening. This was because traders would react noisily and dramatically to breaking market news.
Back in the year 1997, when the floor was closed, she moved back to the CBC. This was just as a news business unit was being created. Later on, she was named co-host of a new program titled “Working Day,” a lively hour of interviews and market news as the trading day unfolded.
Later on, she hosted “After the Bell,” which was focusing on all the news that companies would announce just after the markets closed. Asides from this, she was the host of the popular program, The Money Show, for most of its run on Newsworls. This program focused on personal finance-how to make money, save it, invest it and preserve it.
Lee relishes the rush of live television-of witnessing and telling such dramatic stories as the collapse of Eaton’s Nortel Networks and the U.S. housing market, the rise of the loonie, oil and Google, and the power of technology to shape people’s lives.
