Colthorp serves at WDIV-TV as the WDIV anchoring Local 4’s 5:30 p.m. newscast. He began as a general assignment reporter at WDIV-TV. He graduated from Michigan State University with a journalism degree. Jason spent 14 years as an anchor and reporter at WILX in Lansing. Jason’s career as a journalist has been shaped by his teachers.
The first was Anne Russell, who in fifth grade helped Jason win the Manatee County Speech Contest. It was here, where the speech was written and delivery tips were given, that “My Date With Betty Crocker” became a hit and Jason established an early talent for public speaking. Judy Krocker’s journalism class at Manatee High School used their talent for public speaking a few years later.
Jason knew what he wanted to do after a year of newscasts for the inaugural “Cane News”: be an anchor on “SportsCenter.” When he moved to the news game from being a sports reporter at WILX in Lansing, the dream became being an anchor on the “TODAY Show.”
Jason and spent summers and school years in Michigan and Florida, respectively.
