Chaffetz began his political career in 1990 and became a Republican after meeting Ronald Reagan. He met Regan for the first time when Regan had visited Nu Skin, Chaffetz’s employer as a motivational speaker. He, later on, made an application to be an agent in the United States Secret Service in 2003 but was denied since they had “better-qualified applicants existed”. The following year, he worked as the campaign manager for Jon Huntsman who Utah gubernatorial candidate in 2004.
In January 2005, Chaffetz started working as Huntsman’s chief of staff after Huntsman won the race. He later founded a corporate communications and marketing company called Maxtera Utah Inc. The following year(2006), Huntsman appointed Chaffetz as a trustee for Utah Valley State College.
