Crawford serves at CBS as a Chief Correspondent for Legal Affairs. He was a regular consultant to CBS News from 2005 to 2006. Crawford is a respected Supreme Court expert whose 2007 novel, “Supreme Conflict: The Inside Story of the Struggle for the Control of the United States Supreme Court,” earned critical praise and became an immediate New York Times Bestseller.
She started reporting for the Chicago Tribune Court in 1994 and became a law and political reporter for all ABC News services, a Supreme Court consultant for The NewsHour With Jim Lehrer on PBS, and a legal analyst for CBS News’ “CBS Evening News” and “Face the Nation.” She has written on several of the big court appointments and confirmation hearings of the past 15 years and amassed news. Chief Justice John Roberts gave his first tv interview to Crawford and one of the few interviews he was able to receive with a total of five of the existing judges of the Court, as well as with former Justice Sandra Day O’Connor.
Crawford also sat in his first tv interview with then-86-year-old Justice John Paul Stevens, as well as Justices Clarence Thomas, Antonin Scalia, and Stephen Breyer. Crawford’s in-depth reporting on the Bush Administration’s legal war on terror and its exclusive reports on questionable detention methods used by terror suspects have been highly acclaimed and credited as a cause for congressional hearings. Washington Magazine called her one of Washington’s best reporters.
Crawford started her career as a journalist at the Tribune in 1987, entering legal affairs in 1993, after graduating from the University of Chicago Law School. The newspaper awarded Crawford its highest honor in 2001 for its role as a correspondent for the 2000 presidential election and legal fights over the White House. She received the same award for her 13-part series on post-civil rights in the South, a project that took her back to her native Alabama.
In 1987, Crawford graduated from the University of Alabama. She has taught journalism at the American University and also lectures on the Court in colleges, law schools, legal associations, and civic organizations around the world. She’s a client of the New York Lounge. She and her family are staying in Washington, D.C.
