Imtiaz Tyab Career
Tyab serves at CBS as the CBS News correspondent based in London and reports for all platforms, including the “CBS Evening News,” “CBS Sunday Morning,” “CBS This Morning,” and CBSN, CBS News’ 24/7 streaming news service.
Tyab was the English reporter for Al Jazeera. He joined AJE in 2010 and covered the aftermath of the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti that killed more than 220,000 people and displaced around 3 million people. He spent several years in Pakistan and was one of the first foreign journalists to broadcast live outside Osama bin Laden’s compound since he was killed in the U.S. Special Forces raid, securing exclusive video from inside the hiding spot. He also announced that a little-known adolescent education activist, now world-famous and Nobel-winning Malala Yousafzai, had been shot in the head by the Taliban.
Tyab has obtained rare access to Pakistani tribal areas attacked in the CIA’s clandestine drone campaign and has joined the U.S. military in neighboring Afghanistan numerous times, including training missions with the Afghan National Security Forces. In 2014, he flew through Afghanistan to report on the polls that saw the country’s first-ever political transition to power.
Tyab traveled to the Middle East later that year and moved to Jerusalem. He spent several weeks in Gaza after Israel’s 50-day war with Hamas, gaining privileged access to an underground jail where Palestinians accused of working with Israel were imprisoned until being executed. He also offered in-depth coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian war, as well as the national elections that saw Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu win his fourth term in office. Tyab traveled to Beirut in 2016, covering Lebanon’s affairs and focusing widely on the Syrian conflict, including the fall of Aleppo and the refugee crisis.
Tyab was a London-based correspondent for BBC News before joining Al Jazeera English. It covered the general election, the 2007-08 global economic crisis, and the deadly 2005 terrorist attacks on London’s rail network by British-born suicide bombers. He was posted to the U.S. for the first year of Barack Obama’s presidency in 2009.
