Lee serves at CBS as a CBS News correspondent based in London, where he reports for CBS News, CBS Newspath, and CBSN. Lee, who has joined CBS News covering big world stories, has won a variety of top awards in journalism, including Emmy, Peabody, and the Tom Renner Investigative Reporters and Editors Fellowship. He has written widely in the Middle East, Europe, and East Asia.
Prior to CBS, he was a CNN reporter based in Jerusalem. Lee joined CNN in 2011 while living in Egypt, where he covered the country’s revolt and the 2013 coup. He has commented on the civil wars in Syria and Libya, addressing all sides of the conflict. In 2011, he was wounded as the rebels tried to control Sirte, the last stronghold of Libyan leader Muammar Al Gaddafi, when the RPG detonated next to him, killing a local paramedic.
In 2014, Lee was blamed for the seven-week war in Gaza. He was the first foreign journalist to join Turkey after a botched coup attempt in 2016. His job has also driven him to discuss the tensions on the Korean Peninsula and the terrorist attacks in London. In 2017, Lee traveled to Jerusalem for CNN to cover coverage in Israel and the Palestinian Territories.
His experience involved exclusive reports for the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), the Palestinian Armed Forces, and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ). He was the first journalist to gain access from IDF to cross the Hezbollah tunnels bordering Israel from Lebanon. It was also granted unique access by the PIJ to tunnels and weapons used to attack Israel.
Before joining CNN, he worked as a multimedia correspondent for the local Egyptian newspaper “The Daily News Egypt” and covered the events leading up to the Arab Spring. During that time, he was also a freelance video journalist for Time magazine and also spent a year as a producer for Reuters.
