Williams serves at CBS News as a CBS News Foreign Correspondent based in Istanbul, Turkey. Williams, who is fluent in Mandarin, was awarded the George Polk Award in 2012 for reporting on Chinese dissident Chen Guangcheng, after escaping house arrest and escaping to the U.S. The Embassy of Beijing. She was the first reporter to visit his village—the escape of government security guards—where other members of his family were threatened by the Chinese authorities.
In 2015, Williams won the Edward R. Murrow Award for continued coverage of ISIS and the Jack R. Howard Award from the Scripps Howard Foundation for early reports on ISIS in Syria and northern Iraq.
Williams was one of the first journalists to write on the rise of ISIS in the north of Iraq in the summer of 2014. She continued to cover ISIS throughout the area, including the battle for Tikrit, the finding of mass graves in western Iraq, and the advance of militants in Libya.
Williams has covered Syria’s civil war from inside the region, where she and her team were granted access to a jail where ISIS convicted terrorists were being detained and interviewed female Kurdish soldiers on the frontline. Williams’ international study covers the collapse of the Russian-backed government in Kiev; the search for lost Malaysian Airlines Flight 370; the Israeli-Gaza conflict; the uprisings in Egypt after the resignation of former President Mohammed Morsi from office; and the earthquake in Nepal. She also presented rare accounts from Saudi Arabia and interviewed women who had been disciplined for claiming the right to drive.
