Her coverage of the coronavirus pandemic won NBC New York the prestigious Alfred I. DuPont-Columbia University Award in January 2021. Columbia University has recognized Avalos with an award for her work. The Alfred I. DuPont has long been honored as the documentary, broadcast, and online equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize.
Over the years with NBC New York, she has reported on numerous biggest stories in the Tri-State such as the coronavirus outbreak. Before joining NBC New York, she served at the CBS Owned station, KTVT-TV in Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas. She spent half a decade there working as a weekday afternoon news anchor. She was also responsible for delivering breaking news coverage. Avalos covered the deadly ambush of 5 Dallas police officers in the year 2016, live from the ground. She was the 1st journalist to cover the police robot that assisted in bringing down the suspect. Avalos reported on the trial of Amber Guyger following the coverage of the verdict and sentencing.
Before going to KTVT, she served at NBC 6/WTVJ-TV in Miami, Florida as a general assignment reporter and multimedia journalist. While there, she traveled to Sanford, FL to report on the George Zimmerman trial, and was among the 1st South Florida reporters to report on the death of Trayvon Martin. Avalos started her journalism career at News 12 The Bronx in New York City as a news anchor. There she covered the 2011 Hurricane Irene and assisted in developing the pilot that would later become News 12 en Español. Avalos got her start in TV when she was 12 years old when he served as a host of a Spanish-language children’s program, “Paleokids,” concentrating on the world of dinosaurs for Discovery Channel Latin America.
