Keane was given a chance to work as the Secretary of Defense in November 2016 after Stanley A. McChrystal declined the post. However, Keane declined the offer since his wife had just died and stated that he could not handle the job at the time.

During his year working as an American general and ranger, he went to Vietnam where he served as a Ranger paratrooper. He also went to different countries including Haiti, Kosovo, Bosnia, and Somalia. In 2003, he retired from military service.
