Galen started his first TV career as a reporter in College Station, Texas, after graduating with honors and two degrees from the University of Oregon. He then returned to the Pacific Northwest, where he worked as a newscast producer in Eugene, honing his skills. Galen’s time at KAPP/KVEW-TV in Kennewick, WA, was formative.
He rose through the ranks to become the station’s weeknight anchor and editor at 6 p.m., shooting his own stories and filling in for weather forecasts. In his first year, he won a Society of Professional Journalists award for becoming the market’s first publicly LGBTQ broadcaster to report stories of hate speech and group resilience. His series, which includes LGBTQ youth and people handing out graphic, religious flyers, has been well-received.
Galen was nominated for a national GLAAD Media Award for his series about LGBTQ youth and people sending out gritty, religious flyers – the only local journalist nominated alongside national TV networks. Galen then took a risk and moved 3,000 miles away from home to work as one of the evening anchors at WCAX, Vermont’s flagship television station.
