Fred Blankenship is an American news anchor who anchors Channel 2 Action News at Noon and Channel 2 Action News from 4:30 a.m. to 7 a.m. He joined the WSB-TV family in 2007.
Fred Blankenship Career
Prior to coming to Atlanta, Blankenship worked six years at San Diego’s KGTV as a reporter and weekend anchor. In San Diego, he won awards for stories on drug prevention and community outreach. Many of the stories he covered focused on the growing problem of gangs. Also, Blankenship reported on the state’s largest fires. In 2004, he covered the Democratic National Convention in Boston.
Before he got to KGTV, Blankenship worked at KAKE TV in Wichita, Kansas. In Kansas Blankenship chased storms on a regular basis developing expertise at covering severe weather. Prior to KAKE, he worked at KRON in San Francisco where he was apart of a team that received the prestigious Edward R. Murrow award for the documentary “About Race.”
He has been a member of the National Association of Black Journalists and also a member of the National Press Photographers Association.
Since his arrival at WSB-TV, he has traveled to California for special reports on Georgia’s water crisis comparing how the two states tackle water issues. Blankenship has also written and produced special assignment news series and been a part of Prime Time Action News projects. He actively hosts local leadership and community events and celebrations. Blankenship’s true passion is working with kids and young adults to help ensure they get added encouragement and support to accomplish whatever it is they want to do in life.
