Zakaria graduated from the Cathedral and John Connon School in Mumbai and then attended Yale University. He graduated from the university in the year 1986 with a Bachelor of Arts. During his stint there, he served as editor-in-chief of the Yale Political Monthly and the president of the Yale Political Union. He also served as a member of the Party of the Right and the Scroll and Key society. Upon graduation, he enrolled at Harvard University, where, in the year 1993, he obtained a Ph.D. in government. There he studied under Stanley Hoffmann and Samuel P. Huntington, as well as Robert Keohane (international relations theorist). Zakaria also holds honorary degrees from Oberlin College, Brown, the University of Miami, and other educational institutions.

Zakaria serves at CNN as a host/anchor of a domestic and international affairs program that airs Sundays on CNN/U.S. and all over the globe on CNNI, “Fareed Zakaria GPS.” He also works as a columnist for The Washington Post. Zakaria has interviewed various people with high-profile names on the program “Fareed Zakaria GPS,” such as Bill Clinton (former U.S. president), Hillary Clinton (U.S. Secretary of State), Barack Obama, and Moammar Gadhafi (former Libyan leader), just to name a few. 

He began hosting Fareed Zakaria GPS special on CNN in October 2010. His first-ever primetime on the program was “Restoring the American Dream”, which featured exclusive interviews with 4 global CEOs and offered rare insights into the international economic crisis. On October 21, 2010, his article, “How to Restore the American Dream,” was featured by “TIME”. He was recognized with a George Foster Peabody Award for this special in the year 2012.

Zakaria also serves as a contributor to his thoughtful analysis of world events and public affairs to quarterly CNN/TIME magazine specials, CNN.com, and many other programs across CNN global-wide. For one decade (2000-2010), Zakaria worked as an editor of Newsweek International and as a columnist for Newsweek.
