Prior to turning to broadcast news, Riggins was a mechanical engineer from the University of Texas. She put her degree to work as an equipment engineer for a telecom company. After several years she decided to take a new path and went back to school to pursue a communication and television journalism career.
She began her journalism career at KXII-TV in Sherman, Texas as a weekend reporter and anchor. After a period of time, she came back to her hometown to work for the 24-hour local news channel News 8 Austin ow Spectrum News and later evening news anchor. She covered an Outstanding Live Report for her story on students protesting the Iraq war which helped her to win an Emmy award. Her Best Documentary in regard to a series of reports focusing on the growing and disturbing trends of child abuse placed her in a position to win a prestigious national Edward R. Murrow Award.
Furthermore, she won other awards including Outstanding Service in the Field of Communications from the national sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, the Outstanding Community Service Award from the Teamster’s National Black Caucus, and the Pinellas County Urban League’s President’s Award. She is most proud of the community service award she was named in her honor from Men in the Making.
