Before his tenure at WPLG, he had spent about 5 years working at WPVI-TV where he served as a news reporter and anchor based in Philadelphia. From 1980 to 1983, he worked at WTVJ-TV where he served as a news reporter as well as an anchor. He had previously spent about 2 years working at The Miami News where he served as a news reporter.

Rodriguez has also won several awards including four Edward R. Murrow Awards and two Emmy Awards for excellence in journalism. Miami New Times tagged him as Best News Anchor, as well as Ocean Drive Magazine, tagged him as one of South Florida’s Sharp-Dressed Men.
