He later joined St. Joseph’s College and Vallejo Junior College where he attained his associate degree before transferring to San Jose State University in 1965. Prior to joining FNC, he worked for California’s Democratic leader, Assembly Speaker Jesse Unruh where he was also an intern in 1967. In 1968, he served as a campus coordinator for Kennedy and later on, worked in Nothern California for his primary campaign. He then started working for Republican Assemblyman Ray E. Johnson where he served as his chief of staff.
he also worked on the re-elect of President Richard Nixon in 1972 in California. Due to this, he had a close friendship with Lyn Nofziger, who ran the West Coast Nixon political operation, and Governor Ronald Reagan. In 1973, he went to Washington and worked at the U.S. Department of Transportation where he served as principal assistant to Monagan. He also spent several years working at the National Fire Academy in Washington serving as dean of the faculty and deputy superintendent.
He later on started working for the Assembly Republican Caucus in Sacramento serving as chief of staff. In November 1980, he worked for the president of political affairs under Nofziger serving as deputy assistant after the GOP landslide victory.
