Dr. Rick Knabb is an American Meteorologist/Hurricane Expert working for the Weather Channel in Atlanta, Georgia serving the station as a Hurricane Expert since May 2017. Prior to this, he was working for NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration where he was serving as a Director for the National Hurricane Center between June 2012 and May 2017.

Knabb attended Purdue University where he obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Atmospheric Science in the year 1990. After this, he went on to join Florida State University where he obtained a Master of Science and Doctorate Degree in Meteorology in 1993 and 1999 respectively. Knabb also completed his postdoctoral work at the University of Hawaii in the year 2000.

Knabb works for The Weather Channel serving the station as a Hurricane Expert. He has previously served as the 11th Director of the National Hurricane Center between the 4th of June 2012 and the 12th of May 2017. The 21st of Match 2017 saw him announce that he was making a return to The Weather Channel as the tropical weather expert which was the position he held between 2010 and 2012. After this, he left the position of Director for the NHC.
He began working for the NHC back in the year 2001 and served as a Senior Hurricane Specialist between 2005 and 2008. Additionally, he let the NHC become deputy director of the Central Pacific Hurricane Center in Hawaii. There, he stayed until joining TWC in the month of May 2010 hence replacing Steve Lyons as tropical weather expert.
In addition to this, he made an announcement as the Director of the National Hurricane Center where he started on the 4th of June 2012 and replaced Bill Read. Asides from this, he is back at The Weather Channel as of 2017.
Previously, he also served as the Research Meteorologist and Lead Forecaster at the Mauna Kea Weather Center between 1999 and 2001. Later on, he joined Risk Management Solutions, Inc., in Newark, California and later on in the year 2001 he was serving as an Assistant Product Manager for Weather Risk.
He has also previously worked toward NHC and provided new products and services including a strong emphasis on individual hazards such as the potential storm surge flooding graphic(2014) and the storm surge watch/warning graphic in 2015. He also worked closely with emerbency managers, the internationall community, and media partners. Asides from this, he is a proud a member of the American Meteorological Society.
