Diane Chamberlain Career
Chamberlain is an American Author who has published 30 novels in more than twenty languages. She was an insatiable reader as a child combined with a vivid imagination that inspired her to write. Dianne also penned a few truly terrible “novellas” at the age of twelve. She later put fiction asides for many years as she pursued her education.
Diane spent her summers at the Jersey Show and was raised in Plainfield, New Jersey. These two settings have found their way into her novels. When she was in high school, her favorite authors were the unlikely combination of Victoria Holt and Sinclair Lewis.
Chamberlain loved Holt’s flair for gothic suspense and Lewis’s character studies as well as his exploration of social values. She states that both authors influenced her to be the writer she is today.
After her graduation, she worked in a couple of youth counseling agencies before focusing on medical social work which she adored. Asides from this, she worked in hospitals in San Diego and Washington, D.C. This was before opening a private psychotherapy practice in Alexandria, Virginia, specializing in adolescents.
Later on, she reluctantly closed her practice when she realized that she could no longer split her time between two careers and be effective at both of them. When she was working in San Diego, she started writing. Asides from this, she had a story in her mind since she was a young adolescent about a group of people living together at the Jersey Shore.
When she was waiting for a doctor’s appointment one day, she pulled out a pen and pad and began putting that story on paper. She stated that once she started she could not stop. Later on, she took a class in fiction writing, but for the most part, she learned by doing. The story, PRIVATE RELATIONS took her four years to complete.
Chamberlain sold this book in the year 1986 but wasn’t published until 1989(three very long years!). This was when it earned her the RITA Award for Best Single Title Contemporary Romance Novel. Asides from a brief stint writing for daytime TV(One Life to Live) and a few miscellaneous articles for newspapers and magazines, she focused her efforts on book-length fiction and has written twenty-eight novels.
Her stories are often filled with twists and surprises and hope they also tug at emotions. Asides from this, she has always been hard to characterize some of which are contemporary, historical, and suspenseful, and there has even been a bit of time travel thrown into the mix with The Dream Daughter.
She states that what they do in common is focus on relationships between men and women, parents and children, sisters and brothers, and friends and enemies. Chamberlain states that she can’t think of anything more fascinating that the way people struggle with life’s trials and tribulations, both together and alone.
Chamberlain now lives and writes in North Carolina, the state that has become her true home and spawned many settings for her stories. She lives with her significant other, John, a photographer and filmmaker, and their sweet Shetland Sheepdog, Cole. Chamberlain hopes that her stories move one in some way and give them hours of enjoyable reading.
