Phillips serves at WFTS as the Chief Meteorologist. His fascination with weather began at six years of age when he saw Santa Claus(Father Christmas) on the radar. This made him decide to want to be a television meteorologist. Terrible weather also contributed to his interest in meteorology.
Phillips chose to study at Penn State University because it has a strong reputation in weather forecasting, with one out of every 4 meteorologists in the globe hailing from the university. In 1985, he graduated from the university, and later on, he began working at his first broadcasting job in Los Angeles, as well as Gainesville, Providence.
Eventually, arrived in Tampa, and began working for WFTS. Phillips says that the Bay Area provides him with all of the weather challenges he could want, i.e. tropical storms, plenty of chances to tie himself to a palm tree, and severe thunderstorms. His “hurricane rules,” particularly rule number 7, “Stop freaking out… until I tell you to,” is what Phillips is noted for. Also, he is known for reassuring weather reports.
