That sparked an illustrious career for him, as he quickly rose to become an Instant Replay Official, working two Super Bowls and two conference championships.
Blandino oversaw the NFL’s notable full-time hire of line judge Sarah Thomas, the league’s first female official, during his tenure as commissioner of officiating. He retired as Vice President of Officiating after a distinguished career that included critical input on system upgrades and early adoption of technological transformations.
Blandino founded his own company, “Under the Hood,” in 2009, to provide training and evaluation for instant replay officials. The NFL was among his clients, as were the Big Ten, Mid-American, Pac-12, Big 12, and Mountain West college football conferences. Blandino is an advocate for sports equality and the Executive Producer of “Her Turf,” a documentary that follows three female football referees as they bravely try to level the playing field.
