David Ushery Education
Ushery is a proud graduate of the University of Connecticut. He attended the university in 1985 and graduated in 1989 with a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Political Science. During his stint there, he was a 1987 Harry S Truman Scholar, a student member of the UConn Board of Trustees, and was part of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. He has been responsible for investigating the high rates of suicide among firefighters and placed a vital spotlight on the emotional struggles faced throughout their lifetimes. Ushery holds a New York Emmy Award for his profile on 9/11 responder Michael Dorian in the year 2019, who underwent a diagnosis of cancer and followed his service and was later fighting a battle to secure health benefits due to his under the law. He was responsible for conducting one of the last televised interviews with Luis Alvarez (the late NYPD Detective Luis Alvarez). The detective assisted in leading the grassroots campaign whose result was the renewal of the federal Victim’s Compensation Fund.

Ushery started his journalism career as a lead evening news reporter at WFSB-TV in Hartford, Connecticut. Also, at the same time, he served as a news reporter for the Los Angeles Times and the Hartford Courant. When he was 11 years old, he was chosen from a search to host a nationally syndicated television show, “Kidsworld, ”and hosted it for nearly 6 years. There he conducted several interviews, including with news icon Walter Cronkite.
