Spade recently purchased a new showplace, paying $13.85 million for an amenity-laden mansion above the Sunset Strip. According to the Multiple Listing Service, it is the eighth most expensive sale in Hollywood Hills this year. The modern mansion was built by architect George Kurczyn last year and was initially listed for $13.9 million in November before a surging real estate market drove the price up to $15.45 million over the summer. The modern, box-like residence has six bedrooms, 9.5 bathrooms, a three-story elevator, a wine cellar, a gym, and a movie theater. The main level is comprised of vast, atrium-like spaces, with a glass-encased floating staircase rising from the foyer to the second story.

On November 29, 2000, Spade was attacked while sleeping by his assistant David Warren “Skippy” Malloy, who used a stun gun on him after breaking into Spade’s home early in the morning. Spade told Marc Maron that he was able to escape the 350-pound Malloy by running to his bedroom, grabbing his gun, and defending himself by locking himself in a bathroom armed with a shotgun. Malloy pleaded guilty and avoided jail time on the condition that he seek drug and psychological counseling. He was sentenced to five years probation, ordered to stay at least 100 yards away from Spade, and ordered to perform 480 hours of community service.

Spade provided the voice of Spyro’s dragonfly companion, Sparx, in the 2006 video game The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning. He played Russell Dunbar in the CBS ensemble sitcom Rules of Engagement from 2007 to 2013. He collaborated with TBS on a pilot for an animated series based on Joe Dirt in 2010, but it was eventually canceled. In 2014, Spade appeared as a guest on an episode of the ABC sitcom The Goldbergs (in which his former Just Shoot Me co-star George Segal plays “Pops,” the protagonist’s grandfather). Pops and Spade’s character interacted during the end credits.

In 2019, he began hosting a new late-night show on Comedy Central called Lights Out with David Spade. The television spot aired immediately after The Daily Show, replacing The Colbert Report, The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, and The Opposition with Jordan Klepper. Because production was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Comedy Central announced that the show would not return to the channel once production could resume, but would instead be sold to a third-party broadcaster. Both Tommy Boy and Wes Craven’s New Nightmare (1994) are dedicated to Gregg Fonseca (1952–1994), who died eight months before Tommy Boy’s release. While Fonseca did not work on either film, he was the production designer on the first two Nightmare on Elm Street films, as well as Coneheads and both Wayne’s World films, all of which were produced by Lorne Michaels, as was Tommy Boy.

Spade co-starred in two buddy comedy films, Tommy Boy (1995) and Black Sheep (1999), with fellow Saturday Night Live cast member Chris Farley (1996). Farley died of a drug overdose in 1997, at the age of 33, while they were working on their third film together. When Spade declined to attend Farley’s funeral, rumors spread that the two had a falling out. Spade admitted that their friendship had been strained, in part due to Farley’s drug problem and reckless lifestyle, which he admitted he couldn’t keep up with. However, it never escalated to ill will, and the reason he did not attend the funeral was simply that he was emotionally unable to handle it.

Previous contestants from The Bachelor and The Bachelorette will appear on the show as they travel to a secluded paradise in Mexico where the show will take place. Chris Harrison was the show’s first host.

Spade collaborated with TBS on a pilot for an animated series based on Joe Dirt in 2010, but it was eventually canceled. Joe Dirt is an American adventure comedy film released in 2001. Spade and Fred Wolf wrote the script, and Robert Simonds produced it. The plot revolves around Joe Dirt, a “white trash” young man who appears to be a “loser,” a failure, and an antihero at first.

As he travels in search of his parents, his finer qualities become more apparent. He eventually forms a new “family” of close friends, people he has helped, and those who respect him. While the film received mostly negative reviews, it was a modest financial success. The film has developed a cult following. Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser, the sequel, debuted on Crackle on July 16, 2015.
