David Martin Profile, Bio, Wiki, Nationality
David Martin is an American television news correspondent, reporter/host, and author working for CBS News. He joined the station in the year 1993.
David Martin Career
Martin serves at CBS News as the CBS News national security correspondent, covering the Pentagon and the State Department. In that ability, he covered nearly every major defense, security, and diplomatic story for “CBS Evening News,” and other broadcasts, including “60 Minutes” and “48 Hours.” He also contributed to “60 Minutes Wednesday.” During the invasion of Afghanistan and the conflict in Iraq, Martin’s in-depth understanding of how the State Department, the intelligence community, and the military work on both the ground and Washington placed him as a “big picture” correspondent for CBS News. Using his own outlets and stories from CBS News correspondents in the country and around the world, as well as in Washington, he described and assessed the military tactics and operations for viewers.
Martin has broken a number of interesting news before and after the Iraq war. He was the first to announce on the opening night of the war that the U.S. launched an attack at a palace bunker in southern Baghdad in an effort to overthrow Saddam Hussein. Martin also broke the news of the military’s “shock and awe” policy with his original assault on Baghdad. On his trip to Iraq in May 2003, he was the first journalist to visit Dora Farms, where Saddam was told by the CIA that he had been hiding on the opening night of the battle. Martin won multiple Emmys, most recently in 2012 for his story “Starting Over.”
He also received two Alfred I. DuPont-Columbia University Honors (2002 and 2004) for his work, much of which aired on “CBS Evening News” and “60 Minutes Wednesday.”
With respect to the first Alfred I. DuPont-Columbia University Award, the award committee said that its consistently outstanding research on national security has hit its height this year….break[ing] news on a wide variety of defense and security stories with information that only expertise and doggedness can resolve.
In awarding the second DuPont, the committee said, “David Martin’s coverage on the Pentagon, the military build-up to the Iraq war, and the war itself shows his excellent understanding of national security concerns. Teamed with his long-standing producer, Mary Walsh, Martin regularly breaks new knowledge with straightforward reporting on the Pentagon’s priorities.
