Darren Sweeney is an American Meteorologist working for NBC Connecticut serving the station as a Weekend Morning Meteorologist. He has been working with the station since October 2008.

Sweeney attended and graduated from Central Connecticut State University. There he earned his Bachelor of degree. He then enrolled to earn his Master’s degree at Syracuse University’s highly regarded Newhouse School of Communication. In 2003, he graduated from Mississippi State University’s Broadcast Meteorology program.

Sweeney works for NBC Connecticut serving the station as a Weekend Morning Forecaster. There, he delivers the most accurate weather forecasts. He also likes covering breaking weather during the week live in the studio and the field. Back in the month of October 2008, he joined the First Alert weather team. Additionally, he also gained recognition from the American Meteorological Society(AMS). This is a result of their seal of approval and also the National Weather Association.

He enjoys working at the station he grew up in. That is West Hartford where he forecasts the weather. Darren’s passion for weather began at a young age. This was due to New England’s wild weather extremes. His family knew he was possessed by storms because when everyone was going inside for shelter Darren would grab a video camera and go outdoors!

Sweeney has experience with forecasting New England weather. Being a Springfield TV station meteorologist, Darren won two Associated Press awards. It was for coverage of historic flooding in October 2005 and Best Weathercast in 2000.

Darren gained experience forecasting severe weather and chasing hurricanes for WFTX-TV in Fort Myers, Fla before returning to New England. Here he was located in New Orleans to help sister stations cover Tropical Storm “Isidore” and Hurricane “Lilly” in 2002.

During his occupation at NBC Connecticut, Sweeney covered some of the biggest storms of his career. He was among the team that forecasted during Superstorm Sandy, Hurricane Irene as well as many tornado touchdowns.

In addition to this, he reported during severe weather live. He also covered the massive flooding which took place alongside the Merrimack River back in the month of May 2006. For his professional journalism coverage of the 2009 EF-1 Wethersfield tornado, he was recognized with a Breaking News award by the Connecticut Society.

Away from work, Sweeney enjoys going on road trips which include exploring beautiful New England during the summer. Additionally, he is an Associate Professor at his alma mater at CCSUU teaching in the Departmental of Journalism. In addition to this, he enjoys mentoring students that are looking forward to getting into the exciting field of journalism and broadcast journalism.

Asides from this, he is a proud member of the Connecticut Society of Professional Journalists and serves on the board of this society. Additionally, he volunteers his time at many events raising money and awareness for cancer research. He may also often find Darren involved with helping homeless animals to find good homes. He states that his motto is “Adopt Don’t Shop.”
