He continued to win impressive fights, securing a majority decision over Lamont Peterson in April 2015 and a ninth-round TKO over Paulie Malignaggi in August of the same year. Garcia became a two-division champion in January 2016 when he won the vacant WBC Welterweight World title by unanimous decision over former four-division champion Robert Guerrero.
In November 2016, Garcia returned to his hometown of Philadelphia, beating Samuel Vargas in seven rounds. On March 4, 2017, 16,533 people packed Brooklyn’s Barclays Center for a unification bout between Garcia and WBA champion Keith Thurman, setting an arena record for a boxing match. Thurman eked out a split-decision victory to give Garcia his first defeat. In February 2018, Garcia made his comeback with a ninth-round KO of former world champion Brandon Rios, winning him the PBC Knockout of the Year title.
