Danny Garcia Career

Garcia serves at FOX Sports as the FOX Sports boxing analyst for Premier Boxing Champions shows. “Swift” Garcia is one of the most experienced boxers in the sport today, with one of the strongest left hooks in the sport. He established himself as the undisputed 140-pound champion before adding the 147-pound world title to his collection in 2016. Garcia, a Philadelphia native who was trained by his father, former boxer Angel Garcia, is on his way to becoming a Hall of Famer.

Garcia had a successful amateur career, going 107-13 and winning the 2005 U.S. under-19 national championship and the 2006 U.S. national amateur championship. He won his first 22 fights since turning pro, paving the way for a March 2012 bout with Mexican legend Erik Morales. Garcia won a majority decision over Morales to take the 140-pound title.

Garcia then faced another champion, Amir Khan, who was a 4-to-1 betting favorite in their July 2012 fight in Las Vegas. In the third round, Garcia caught Khan with a devastating left hook that sent the Englishman to the canvas. Garcia then knocked Khan down twice more in the fourth round to win by TKO and cement his status as a rising star in the sport. In a rematch with Morales in October 2012, Garcia knocked out the future Hall of Famer with a deadly left hook in the fourth round.

Garcia defended his titles in 2013 with a pair of 12-round unanimous-decision wins over Zab Judah and an upset victory over Lucas Matthysse, earning him the city’s Pro Athlete of the Year award from the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association. He continued to win impressive fights, securing a majority decision over Lamont Peterson in April 2015 and a ninth-round TKO over Paulie Malignaggi in August of the same year. Garcia became a two-division champion in January 2016 when he won the vacant WBC Welterweight World title by unanimous decision over former four-division champion Robert Guerrero.

In November 2016, Garcia returned to his hometown of Philadelphia, beating Samuel Vargas in seven rounds. On March 4, 2017, 16,533 people packed Brooklyn’s Barclays Center for a unification bout between Garcia and WBA champion Keith Thurman, setting an arena record for a boxing match. Thurman eked out a split decision victory to give Garcia his first defeat. In February 2018, Garcia made his comeback with a ninth-round KO of former world champion Brandon Rios, winning him the PBC Knockout of the Year title.
