Africa’s first community-owned elephant orphanage is located in the foothills of Samburu County in northern Kenya. Reteti Elephant Sanctuary is the name of this magical place of healing and hope.

Reteti saves and releases orphaned and abandoned elephant calves while also providing much-needed benefits to the locals who live alongside them. It is a community collaboration that is reshaping conservation methods and healing centuries of conflict between humans and wildlife.

Members of the Samburu community run the day-to-day operations and look after the eagles. They also run the daily operations and care for the elephants; it’s a win-win situation. As new opportunities emerge, livelihoods improve, and wildlife returns to the area, ensuring a sustainable economy and natural balance in the ecosystem.
