In the year 1990, Amanpour began working as a correspondent based in the New York bureau. Her coverage of the Persian Gulf War in the year 1990 took CNN to a new level of news coverage.

She has covered major crises from numerous world hotspots and secured exclusive interviews with leaders from Africa, Middle East Europe, and beyond. Also, she has conducted interviews with various celebrities like actors.
Amanpour was given a contract by Don Hewitt (60 Minutes creator) to work as a special contributor, where she would cover 4 to 5 in-depth international news reports a year. The contract lasted from 1996 to 2005. For her coverage of the in-depth international news, she earned a Peabody Award in the year 1998. One of Amanpour’s most favorite and unforgettable moments in her TV career was a live telephone interview with Yasser Arafat. This was in March 2002 during the siege on his compound.

Amanpour announced in June 2021 that she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She said that she had one major successful surgery and underwent chemotherapies for several months. She traveled to London in April 2021 to see her doctor for an annual screening. A grapefruit-sized cyst was unfortunately discovered on her right ovary. Amanpour was told that she had to have a Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), a CT scan, and more blood tests. She says that she was shocked!
She was diagnosed with stage 2 ovarian clear cell carcinoma on May 5, 2021. After 10 days, she underwent major surgery and then 18 weeks of chemotherapy. Amanpour says that her son, Darius John, and her ex-husband, State James Rubin are credited for medical experts and support all through the tough times she had during the treatment and recovery time.
