Amanpour announced in June 2021 that she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She said that she had one major successful surgery and underwent chemotherapies for several months. She traveled to London in April 2021 to see her doctor for an annual screening. A grapefruit-sized cyst was unfortunately discovered on her right ovary. Amanpour was told that she had to have a Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), a CT scan, and more blood tests. She says that she was shocked!

She was diagnosed with stage 2 ovarian clear cell carcinoma on May 5, 2021. After 10 days, she underwent major surgery and then 18 weeks of chemotherapy. Amanpour says that her son, Darius John, and her ex-husband, State James Rubin are credited for medical experts and support all through the tough times she had during the treatment and recovery time.
