He, a journalist with experience covering hotspots across Europe and the Middle East, joined CBS News and started contributing to the network at the height of the COVID-19 epidemic in Italy. In March, Livesay was the first correspondent for the American television network to go into the ICU in Italy while the world was at the epicenter of the disaster, and doctors inside the hospital converted scuba masks into ventilators when stocks ran short.
He announced from northern Italy that cemeteries could not keep up with the number of remains. Livesay also noticed bright spots in the face of suffering; in Venice, he talked to volunteers who transported supplies to those in need in gondolas across the city’s famed canals. This week, he stated from Venice that nature is thriving, with streets and canals almost empty of people and transportation.

He brings a wealth of foreign expertise to CBS News, having covered a variety of big stories of global significance, such as the targeted killing of Iranian General Qassim Soleimani, the demonstrations in Hong Kong, and the Vatican’s sex abuse scandals. In 2018, he was the first American TV reporter to return from Libya in nearly a year and had to leave the country in the wake of government warnings for shedding light on the slavery, torture, and exploitation of migrants.
In 2016, he was among the first TV journalists to write from Mosul on the front lines of the Iraqi army’s push to eliminate ISIS.
