Melas reported on the death of Kobe Bryant (NBA legend) and the Weinstein criminal trial in New York, in the year 2020. Melas’s experience with Morgan Freeman, an American actor, narrator, and director led directly to her investigation into his behavior toward women. She said that it was in the year 2017 during a junket for Morgan Freeman’s film “Going in Style,” that he shook and held onto Melas’s hand and looked her up and down, and said variations of the words “I wish I was there,” and “You are ripe.” At the time, Melas was 6 months pregnant.

A camera revealed and exposed Morgan saying “Boy, I wish I was there” while he sat a few feet from Melas. She and her co-anchor, An Phung reported the news on a Thursday newscast that some women have accused Morgan of sexual harassment. Morgan Freeman went ahead and quickly apologized after he saw the news on TV. In the apology, he said that it was his intent for anyone to feel disrespected or uncomfortable.

In January 2020, a fire broke out in Melas’s sons’ room. The house where they were living at the time was a new home that she and her family had just settled in. She noticed a faint wisp of smoke and then suddenly she heard a bang from the door of a neighbor. She calls it a terrible moment of her life.
