Chip Reid Career
Reid serves at CBS as a national correspondent for CBS News covering everything from hard news to features for the CBS Evening News, CBS This Morning, and CBS Sunday Morning in Washington, D.C. From 2009 to 2011, Reid was Chief White House reporter for CBS News, traveling with President Obama on scores of overseas and domestic trips and holding a variety of one-on-one interviews with the President. Prior to his tenure at the White House, he had been covering Capitol Hill for CBS News.
Before joining CBS News, he spent ten years with NBC News, primarily based in Washington, D.C., reporting on politics, justice, security, and international affairs. During the campaign season, Reid often anchored MSNBC’s election news. Reid covered the 1996 re-election bid of Bill Clinton and the 2000 presidential campaign of Al Gore.
Following the attacks of 11 September 2001, Reid reported widely from the Middle East, including Afghanistan, Iraq, Kuwait, Egypt, Qatar, Uzbek, Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. During the first phase of the Iraq war in 2003, Reid was part of the U.S. lead battalion. Marines participated in heavy fighting as they fought their way from Kuwait to Bagdad.
Prior to his career in journalism, Reid practiced law for four years as a lawyer and Chief Prosecutor of the Senate Judiciary Committee. He then worked for two years at a large Washington law firm where he practiced arbitration and lobbying. As an associate professor at Georgetown University, he teaches graduate courses in journalism and politics.
For his education, Reid received a law degree from Columbia Law School and a master’s degree in public relations from Princeton University. During his time at Princeton, he spent three months working with a human rights organization combating apartheid in Johannesburg, South Africa. He received his Bachelor of Arts from Vassar College, where he graduated from Phi Beta Kappa. In 2011, he had the distinction of becoming the first male alum to send a speech at Vassar College.
