Burton attended and graduated from Chicago’s Robert Lindbloom High School.  In April 2007, he was the first alumnus to be inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame. He graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a B.S. degree in Psychology and Biology. While at the University of Illinois, Burton was a member of the Marching Illini, one of the nation’s premier college marching bands, and had the chance to march in the Rose Bowl and the Liberty Bowl.

Cheryl Burton Career

Burton anchors the ABC 7 Eyewitness News at 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. alongside Alan Krashesky. In June 2018 she was promoted from contributing anchor to anchor of the station’s 10 PM newscast. Prior to joining ABC 7 Chicago, Cheryl was a weeknight anchor for the 6 pm news at KWCH-TV in Wichita, Kansas. While at KWCH-TV, Burton was recognized for her role in a campaign that was instrumental in reducing the number of low birth-weight babies and infant deaths. Additionally, she hosted the talk show “Viewpoint” from 1990 to 92.

Burton also served as a general assignment reporter for WMBD-TV in Peoria, Illinois in 1990. Burton started her broadcasting career in 1989 at Chicago’s WGN-TV as co-anchor of the nationally syndicated weekly series “MBR: The Minority Business Report.”Throughout her career, she has also received many honors including several Emmy Awards. 

Burton is also very active in the Chicago community and offers much of her time to non-profit groups and charities. She also serves as a motivational speaker for the Chicago Public Schools and volunteers for the Boys and Girls Club of America. Burton serves on the boards of the Life with Lupus Guild, City Year, and the Multicultural Dance Center. She as well participates in the Rush-Presbyterian/St. Luke’s fashion show. 

She is also a member of the Society of Professional Journalists, the National Association of Black Journalists, and the Chicago Association of Black Journalists. She is also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated.
