Stanley credits his grandfather, George Washington Stanley, with inspiring one of his most referenced principles: “Obey God and leave all the consequences to Him.” In Stanley’s book Courageous Faith: My Story from Life of Obedience, he stated that his grandfather told him that if God tells one to run their head through a brick wall, one should head for the wall as when he gets there, God will make a hole for it.

Charles Stanley Divorce
His wife, unfortunately, filed for divorce on the 22nd of June 1993 after their separation in the spring of 1992. The duo agreed that Anna would amend the lawsuit to seek a legal separation instead of “separate maintenance” while seeking reconciliation.
Later on, on the 20th of March 1995, he again filed for a divorce. Despite this not being the end of the marriage, the Moody Radio Network station in Atlanta(then-WAFS) took Stanley’s daily broadcast off the air during that time. This was as managers concluded that there was no sign of reconciliation. The Stanleys were legally separated when the divorce papers were filed for the last time on the 16th of February 2000. A judge signed the final divorce on the 11th of May 2000.
This divorce caused a minor controversy in the Southern Baptist Convention. This matter was complicated by reports that Stanley had said he would resign as a pastor if he became divorced. During the time of their separation, he stated that he did not believe that it would result in divorce. He stated that when it did, the members of his church overwhelmingly voted to keep him on as pastor.
According to First Baptist Atlanta’s bylaws, he was allowed to remain as pastor as long as he did not remarry. Anna J. Stanley died on the 10th of November 2014. Together with his wife, the duo are proud parents to their daughter named Becky who Stanley has occasionally mentioned in his sermons, and their son named Andy. Andy is the pastor of North Point Community Church in nearby Alpharetta, Georgia.
