Pitts anchors the station’s late-night news program, Nightline. He previously served as the station’s chief national correspondent and also often contributed to 60 Minutes. Ever since he was 18 years old, he wanted to be a journalist. While still in college, he interned at WTVD in Durham, North Carolina. Later on, after his graduation, he worked for several stations on the East Coast where he wore different hats.
He worked for WNCT-TV in Greenville, North Carolina where he served as a reporter and weekend sports anchor. Pitts, later on, moved to WAVY-TV in Portsmouth, Virginia from 1984 to 1986 where he served as a military reporter. In 1988, he left the station for WFLA-TV where he served as a substitute anchor as well as a reporter till 1989. After leaving WFLA-TV, he moved to WCVB-TV in Boston and served as a special assignment reporter.
In 1994, he left the station to join WSB-TV in Atlanta, Georgia where he served as a general assignment reporter till 1996. Additionally, this was also his last job at a local station. Pitts left WSB-TV to join CBS Newspath, in Washington, D.C. where he served as a correspondent. CBS Newspath is a 24-hour affiliate news service of CBS News that was aired from 1997 to 1998.
In May 1998, he has tagged a CBS News correspondent in Miami from 1998 to 1999 and soon after moved to Atlanta from 1999 to 2001 and soon after moved to New York City in January 2001. Pitts was also named one of CBS New’s lead reporters during the September 11 attacks and was also awarded an Emmy for this coverage.
