Gray portrays Hakeem Lyon on Fox’s TV series, Empire. Hakeem Lyon is the main character in the Empire television series. He is Lucious and Cookie Lyon’s youngest son, the brother of Andre and Jamal, and the father of Bella and Prince Lyon.
He is a rapper signed to his father’s label, Empire Entertainment, as well as his and his mother’s label, Lyon Dynasty. Lyon Family Management represents him at the moment. Gray appeared as Michael Bivins in The New Edition Story, an American biographical three-part miniseries about the R&B group New Edition. In an attempt to mend fences, Ralph asks Gary if the others could have lead vocals in more songs, to which Gary agrees. Bobby sang lead vocals on “Mr. Telephone Man” when New Edition was working with singer-songwriter and producer Ray Parker Jr.
During the recording, Bobby begins to mock Mike for his inability to correctly hold a note. Mike takes this, as well as the other members’ teasing, personally. He chooses to take a cab rather than ride in the limo with the group, slamming the door shut in frustration. Hearing the slam, the driver assumes Mike is in the car with them.
He backs up and runs over Mike’s foot inadvertently. Bobby antagonizes Mike once more, and Mike spits in his face. This eventually leads to a fight, which causes the rest of the group to disband. Gary informs the group that Mike’s mother believes he should be kicked out of the group due to fighting. The other guys, on the other hand, defend Mike.
When Mike returns, Bobby is the first to approach him and apologize for his actions. This enables the group to proceed. While their internal problems are being resolved, New Edition is clashing with their new choreographer.
Jheryl is irritated when Ralph’s girlfriend pays him a visit during dance rehearsals. Gary, frustrated, decides to bring in someone who can help keep the group focused: Brooke, who was only brought back as the choreographer, not the manager.

It was announced in March 2015 that both Smollett and Gray had signed with Columbia Records as solo acts. Gray was cast in the BET miniseries about R&B boy band New Edition in April 2016, alongside Elijah Kelley, Luke James, Algee Smith, Keith Powers, and Woody McClain, which premiered in January 2017. Gray agreed to play Michael Bivins, a co-founding member. Gray co-starred as Tyrell in Honey: Rise Up and Dance with Teyana Taylor in April 2018.
