Lapis serves at 22News as a Broadcast Meteorologist and Weather Entertainer. He began his career in broadcasting at the age of 15 at WILI, a radio station in Willimantic, Connecticut. KISS 95.7 in Hartford, CT; WIOQ in Philadelphia, PA; WYYY and WJPZ in Syracuse, NY; and WPRO-FM in Providence, RI have all employed him as a radio on-air personality.
Lapis has received numerous awards for his forecasting efforts during his time at 22News. He won the Broadcaster of the Year Award from the National Weather Association in 2013. Lapis and the 22News Storm Team won the Massachusetts & Rhode Island Associated Press award for best weathercast in 2000, 2007, and 2012.
The American Red Cross of Pioneer Valley presented the 22News Storm Team with the Hometown Heroes Award for their forecasting and continuous coverage on the day of the June 1, 2011 tornadoes, which many viewers credited with saving their lives. Lapis is out in the community every year, speaking to dozens of school groups and civic organizations about the weather, climate, and television news when he isn’t at 22News.
He serves on the board of directors of the Office of Communicating in the Public Interest as an advocate for public service broadcasting. Lapis serves on the board of directors of the United Church of Christ’s Office of Communication as an advocate for public service broadcasting. He is also a member of the Silver Lake Conference Center and Youth Camp’s Board of Directors in Sharon, Connecticut. Brian used to go to the camp as a kid and later volunteered as an adult.
