Barbara Starr is an American Emmy award-winning television news journalist who worked at CNN serving as a Pentagon correspondent based in the network’s Washington, D.C., bureau. She worked at CNN from 2001 till her departure in December 2022.

Starr holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from California State University, Northridge. Starr worked as the Pentagon correspondent at CNN who brought viewers the most recent news from the Pentagon about the war in Afghanistan and other national security issues. Starr made several trips to Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Horn of Africa since 2003, where she has been embedded with US troops. She went to Beirut, Lebanon, with US Marines tasked with evacuating Americans during Israel’s war with Hezbollah in 2006.
As the only reporter traveling with Lt. Gen. Russel Honore, as he directed hurricane relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, she had also exclusive access to him. She has also provided direct reporting from the Persian Gulf, Russia, Central America, and the Chinese-North Korean border. Starr has also profiled a number of wounded troops and regularly reported on the fallen from Section 60 of Arlington National Cemetery, the final resting place for veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
She also came to CNN from ABC News, where she had been a producer for the network’s news originating from the Pentagon since 1998, providing on- and off-air reporting on military and national security issues. She has also worked as a reporter for Nightline, World News This Morning, World News Now, ABC Radio, and ABCNews.com.
Starr previously worked as the Washington, D.C., bureau chief for Jane’s Defence Weekly, a London-based weekly news magazine, where she covered all aspects of national security, intelligence, defense, and military policy for nine years. During this time, she conducted numerous one-on-one interviews with current defense secretaries and central intelligence directors. She also visited the Balkans, the Persian Gulf, and the NATO headquarters in Brussels. Prior to Jane’s, Starr worked as a correspondent for Business Week from 1979 to 1988.
Starr worked as an energy correspondent in the magazine’s Washington, D.C. bureau, covering OPEC and other environmental and economic issues. While at ABC News, she won an Emmy for her work as a location producer at NORAD/Cheyenne Mountain, where she covered the millennium transition at Moscow rollover time.
