He covered news for four years along the United States/Mexico border prior to starting reporting in the commonwealth. During that time, he covered many topics impacting the community including natural disasters across Texas, mental health, as well as crime. Furthermore, he was able to travel along the south Texas border from El Paso to Brownsville to focus on how people were living in the gaps of the border fence.

While studying, Vargas was able to land his first television news job as a video editor. Vargas began his career in Grand Junction, Colorado as a reporter. While there, he provided the community with early morning reports in the snow and under the hot sun. After some time, he was elevated to a morning anchor position.

During his free time, he likes experiencing some great-tasting local Hampton Roads restaurants along with his wife, going to the beach, as well as running on the trail with his dog, Milo.
