Angela Chen Profile

Angela Chen is an American Emmy Award-winning News Anchor/Reporter currently working for KESQ-TV since joining the station in November of 2018. She currently anchors the morning newscasts, from Monday through Friday at the station. Before joining KESQ, Chen was a teacher of graduate school seminars at the University of Southern California Annenberg School of Communication and Journalism.

Previously, she was in Houston, Texas, working for KRIV-TV,  a Fox-owned-and-operated station, as a Fill-in Anchor and a News Reporter. There she covered everything from two Super Bowls to the 2016 election to hurricanes. She also provided live network coverage of terrorist plans and historic floodwater damage. Additionally, she was the host of a weekly cuisine feature and “The Asian Connection,” KRIV’s public affairs piece that focused on Asian American newsmakers and Houston’s diversity.

While working for KRIV, she also worked as a News Reporter at KTRK-TV, an ABC-owned-and-operated station in Houston, Texas. Chen used to wear red glasses and was always on books when she was younger. Her passion for the written word led her to journalism (and, most likely, myopia), and it has changed her life.

Chen is a proud alumnus of the University of California in San Diego, where she obtained bachelor’s degrees in Writing, Psychology, and World Literature. There, she studied under renowned professor Eliot Wirshbo. Chen’s first employment was as a News Writer for morning shows at KUSI-TV in San Diego. She then joined NY1 News as a News Reporter after graduating from Columbia University’s Journalism School in New York City with a Master of Science Degree.

She has worked at news stations in San Diego and Bakersfield while at home before transferring to KOLO in Reno. Chen has also contributed to Bustle, The Huffington Post, and The New York Times, among other digital and print publications.

Throughout her career, she won the Philip S. Weintraub Media Award and the Lone Star Award. Also, she holds the N.S. Bienstock Fellowship, as well as the RIAS German Fellowship. She received a grant from the Society of Environmental Journalists in the year 2020. In addition, she was chosen as the largest grant recipient for the University of Southern – California Center for Health Journalism Impact Fund in the year 2020. Both grants were used to create a multi-part Salton Sea series. She was awarded the Maynard 200 Fellowship in the year 2021.
