From 1988 to 1991, he was a member of the men’s soccer team at Rutgers University. In 1991, he was named a first-team All-American and was nominated for the Hermann Trophy and the Missouri Athletic Club Player of the Year. In 1992, Lal trained with former Arsenal player Bob McNab in California, which led to a trial with the club, but he was released.

Lalas serves as the lead studio and game analyst. He was appointed lead studio analyst for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia earlier this summer, presenting in-depth coverage from FOX Sports’ state-of-the-art studio in Moscow’s iconic Red Square.

Lalas was a standout defender on the United States Men’s National Team during the 1994 World Cup. He was also a member of the United States Olympic Team in 1992 and the World Cup squad in 1998. He was the first American to compete in Italy’s top division, Serie A, with Padova before joining the MLS in its inaugural season in 1996. Lalas, one of Major League Soccer’s first signings, started his MLS career with the New England Revolution.

He played for the MetroStars, Kansas City Wizards, and Los Angeles Galaxy. He had much of his on-field success with the Los Angeles Galaxy, where he won the Concacaf Champions Cup, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, and the MLS Cup in 2002.

After retiring in 2002, he was appointed President and General Manager of the San Jose Earthquakes; he held the same role with the New York MetroStars in 2005 and the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2008 before joining ESPN. Lalas joined the Italian Serie A club Padova after the 1994 FIFA World Cup. Padova finished the 1994–95 season 14th in the table, despite Lalas anchoring the team’s defense and scoring three goals off-set pieces. He did not establish himself as a starter in the United States’ central defense until the beginning of 1994. He went on to start and play all ninety minutes of the United States’ four games in the 1994 FIFA World Cup, earning him honorable mention All-Star status.
