During his career as a baseball player, he accumulated a total of 1,974 strikeouts. He started his baseball in 1987 playing for the New York Yankees till his departure in 1989. His next stop was at the Toronto Blue Jays from 1989 to 1995 and the Florida Marlins from 1996 to 1997 and 2005. From 1998 to 2004, he played for the New York Mets and played again for the New York Yankees in 2005 before he retired with a 3.80 ERA and a 162-132 record.
Leiter has also won several awards and honors including World Series rings with the Marlins in 1997 and the Blue Jays in 1993. In 2000 and 1996, Leiter was NL All-Star and threw the first no-hitter on May 11, 1996, which is in Marlins franchise history. In 2000, he won the Roberto Clemente Award for his philanthropic efforts and community service.
