Before joining WRAL-TV, he worked at WAVY-TV based in Norfolk, Virginia where he served as the main anchor and reporter from 2004 to 2007. Prior to his tenure at WAVY-TV, he worked at WNCT-TV based in Greenville, North Carolina from 2001 to 2004, and served as a producer and news reporter. Owens has also won several awards and honors including two Regional Emmy Awards one of them being for covering the 2018 Hurricane Florence.
Owens also won first place in 2014 at the General News Awards. In 2004, he received a Radio Television Digital News Association award as well as Best Consumer Reporter. In 2003, he won the North Carolina Press Award as well as the North Carolina Associated Press Award. Whenever he is not working, he enjoys spending his free time with his family and friends. He also enjoys biking, traveling, playing tennis, boating, and a ton of other activities. Some of his favorite assignments include enclosing Marines at Camp Lejeune in 2003 for their very first deployment in Iraq.
