Melissa graduated from Georgia Tech with a Bachelor of Science in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. She worked on a collaborative research study to explore ways to increase warning lead times during tornadic severe weather events while interning at the National Weather Service Office in Peachtree City during college.

Nord serves at 11Alive as a weekend morning meteorologist. Her weather broadcasts on cable news in 2020 may have covered national and international weather stories. She was most recently a part-time reporter for The Weather Channel and CNN, where she covered the Atlantic Basin’s busiest hurricane season on record and the Northeast’s worst snowstorm in nearly five years. She worked at WUSA 9, 11Alive’s sister station in Washington, D.C., for four years before returning home. With the help of augmented reality graphics, she was able to bring her craft of explaining the “science behind the weather” to life. Melissa was named the best meteorologist in the D.C.-Baltimore area by the Associated Press and the Emmy Awards in 2018.
Melissa is a proponent of inspiring others to be enthusiastic about science, and she is looking forward to attending community events and visiting schools throughout North Georgia to promote STEM education. She was active in the local Children’s Science Center in Northern Virginia while in D.C., serving on the STEM Advisory Council and planning weather events to help engage students in hands-on STEM learning at a young age. Melissa worked as a meteorologist at LEX 18 in Lexington, Kentucky, before moving to D.C. She began her career at The Weather Channel as a weather producer and graphics meteorologist in Atlanta.
